Abstract: To discuss the improvement of baffle design, spray system, coating environment control, coating process control, etc. when using a coater for sugar coating.
Foreword
The traditional tablet coating technique used in the production of sugar-coated tablets has the disadvantages of long coating time, greatly dependent on operator’s experiences and techniques during production, and the operation is various due to different personnel and places, which has a great impact on semi-finished products. For above problems, Canaan has improved the key components of its coater and has optimized the sugar coating process:
1. Baffle Design
The distribution of baffle is particularly important to mix the coating solution and tablets evenly, and prevent the coated tablets from sliding in the pan. The optimized impeller blade improves the mixing uniformity and makes the tablets surface smoother.
2. Spray System
The spray technology of mixed coating solution is used for sugar coating. The mixed coating solution is prepared according to the special proportion of solid contents and preparation method, and sprayed in coating process, using atomizer and conveying system specially used in Canaan. Advantages: The coating solution is sprayed out of spray nozzle under high pressure, forming a quite thin mixed coating solution on the surface of tablets. The feature “multi-times spraying, layer drying, weight gain rapid” of sugar coating process plays a significant role in improving product quality, makes full use of coating materials and shorten the coating time.
3. Coating Environment Control
Air humidity, which has a great impact on sugar coating, is a critical process parameter of sugar coating. Both the drying speed and moisture content of tablets are influenced by the air relative humidity in the pan. A dehumidifier need to be placed in the coater to ensure a stable coating environment. The appropriate air RH is 10%-25%, and the air temperature is 50-70℃.

The application of dehumidification not only solves the coating problems under extreme weather conditions by improving the coating efficiency in humid climate; but also provides stable humidity conditions, which makes the coating process of different batches tend to be consistent, and effectively ensure the consistency of coating quality.
4. Coating Process Control
The process parameters are preset into the control system by using TechproM system independently developed by Canaan, operators only need to call the corresponding control process formula before each coating operation. Appropriate control parameters can reduce the probability of contact between operators and products, lessen the manual intervention, ensure the stability and consistency of coating quality from different batches, and reduce the dependence on operators. Automatic control of sugar coating can also reduce the quality difference between batches caused by different operators.
